National Planning Framework 3 and Scottish Planning Policy Published Today

The Scottish Government has today published National Planning Framework 3 and Scottish Planning Policy in their final form. This represents the final stage in the process following previous rounds of engagement, consultation and parliamentary scrutiny over the last two years.

Derek Mackay MSP, Minister for Local Government and Planning, launched the documents at an event in Glasgow, describing it as a watershed moment for the planning system in Scotland and recognising that the transition to a low carbon Scotland was the biggest challenge, while focussing on delivering good quality development and protecting special places.

The two documents are available from the links below:

Scottish Planning Policy

NPF3 identifies a number of 'National Developments' in the area, including the expansion of Aberdeen Harbour, strategic airport enhancements at Aberdeen International Airport, Carbon Capture and Storage at Peterhead and high voltage electricity transmission infrastructure. Aberdeen City and Shire is also identified as the area of Scotland likely to experience the highest rate of growth in population and households over the next two decades.

The Aberdeen City and Shire SDPA participated actively in the preparation processes for both documents.
